One observer said, about the new Manitou Solarium construction in Midland district, "It is a beautiful building that merges old and new together and brings Manitou into the twenty first century". Another comment posted gave a less rosy review, "It is a scar on the beautiful face of Manitou." The new super-structure encloses the Midland Residents Park in a ultra-modern steel and glass shell protecting the park from the elements and allowing it to be used in all four seasons.
"Manitou is about change and progress even those of us at the Historical Society know that without change we would have no history to protect" said Holden Wrinkle of the Manitoulin Historical Society. Bill D'Rite, Manitou Public Utilities Commission Foreman had this to say about the conversion, "It is a very unique construction. We had to peel back the ground layer and construct a concrete substructure under it, then return the natural surface back over the new foundation. The steel support posts have been mounted through the original stone block wall that surrounded the park thus maintaining some of its historical design. While the structure is obviously large the colours of dark green and black were chosen to better camouflage the build into the landscape."
"The construction of the Midland Park Solarium could be perceived as setting precedent for a architectural shift in Manitou" said Winter Silversmith, Chief Administrative Officer for Manitou Tourism. "It is not our intention to jump immediately into the future but time passes and we must keep up. We have spoken with the Historical Society and other community groups about the future developments in Manitou. We are like any RealLife city we will try our best to blend the old and new together in harmony but construction will proceed".
Construction of the new Midland Park Solarium was completed before Hurricane Matthew struck Florida, RL, the facility will be open and available to rent as soon as the grid is back online.
