The Regional Municipality of Manitou has started to bring accessibility awareness to the Great Canadian Grid. They have constructed new wheelchair permit parking spaces and the new rental station pictured above. If you click on the rental station you receive a non-scripted wheelchair. "We hope in the future to have a scripted wheelchair available for free" Winter Silversmith CAO Manitou Tourism said "but for now it is the awareness we want to bring to the grid".
Critics have questioned the creation of wheelchairs and other mobility devices in the metaverse "why have a wheelchair when you can fly?" one person asked a while back in SL. "It is about bringing awareness of all of the faces of our community to light. It is no different than creating a dark skinned avatar or one wearing glasses, you are trying to create a harmonious and diverse community that fairly represents all cultures, creeds, races, languages and abilities" Winter said.
The Municipality will be constructing ramps, parking spaces and more signage to help educate the public to the diversity in GCG and bring awareness that those with mobility challenges play an equally vital role in our growth. "When I managed a town in SL I did the same conversion, adding ramps to municipal buildings and creating signage to educate the public. I was a volunteer involved with municipal accessibility committee in RealLife a few years back and I want to bring that experience inworld" Winter told the Corran Journal.
The construction of new parking spaces, signage and wheelchair rental stations across the Manitou, GCG regions is expected to cost around one thousand prims.
