Lions Head Fire Services responded to a 9-1-1 call about a vehicle fire in the development area of the old town of Manitou. The department is about ten minutes from the area and when crews arrived the truck was completely engulfed. Ontario Regional Police closed the section of Highway 8-A for about an hour while fire crews extinguished the blaze.
The driver of the truck, Peter Fields of Wiarton, stated that the engine overheated and smoke began to rise from the hood. He was able to maneuver the vehicle to a safe stop parking lot across from the arcade and witnesses called the emergency services. The truck was completely destroyed by the fire, fortunately the driver escaped without injury. The damage to the almost new vehicle is estimated to be $22,000. The highway was re-opened by police following the incident.
