Today I stopped by the new Elk Bones Tavern, located in the north-east corner of the Manitou Market, for some lunch. It has been cold in the village these past couple days so I wanted something to keep me warm as I walkabout the community. The Tavern is located in a beautiful three storey Tudor style building across from one of the warming stations in the region and right next door to Northgate Estates.
I walked up the stairs, inside the tavern, and chose a nice table over near the serving area with a nice view of the yard. The lovely wench Anna came over with the lunch special, a cup of ale and a plate of hot lamb chops with a side of greens. In one word - delicious. The lamb was seasoned with salt and pepper and moistened with olive oil while the greens were fresh and crisp. They buy only from the local markets and I am pretty sure they have a greenhouse hidden somewhere in the village in order to get such delicious vegetables. Anna was quite pleasant and attentive to my needs, quickly refilling my cup whenever I ran low and asking if I would like a second helping at no extra charge.
The tavern is clean and well maintained. It looks like they will be using only the first storey, for now, as the rooms upstairs are filled with various trunks and furniture pieces. The fire place was warm and inviting and there was no signs of vermin, though I imagine the resident cat keeps them well at bay.
The lamb chops, greens and three cups of ale were very affordable at only one pound two shillings. What a fine place to eat on such a chilly afternoon, I will definitely return here in the near future.
