Work has been completed on the new roadway linking downtown Meaford, GCG with the Midland, GCG district.
The construction of the two lane road included a new vehicle / pedestrian bridge over the river, a new bus terminal in Massey, GCG, and crosswalk near the landing point in Meaford, GCG. A storage building was removed in the harbour district to allow for additional parking. The street, proposed to run past the heli-pad in the above photo, instead went into the harbour district to allow for more efficient flow of traffic.
The new route includes the construction of a new mid-city bus terminal. The new terminal, along with being an evacuation muster point, will provide limited bus services to Midland, Manitou and Massey, GCG. New bus stop signs will be placed throughout the affected regions by the end of the week and a listing of stops posted in both the Massey and Meaford, GCG terminals.
The new roadway has not been named yet and additional signage needs to be posted. A representative for Manitou, GCG stated that the downtown Meaford, GCG streets have been named and everything will be properly signed as soon as possible. The roadway and related work has cost the city over two hundred prims, a cost that will be shared with Meaford, Massey and Midland, GCG.
Manitou Tourism continues to negotiate with the Memorial Park for the construction of a road "the Minesing connection" along the channel and through the park to Massey, GCG. Memorial Park committee members have argued that the new road coined as the " 'road to nowhere' is not needed as part of the Nuclear Emergency Response Plan since Mud River Parkway leads north from the plant area along the waterway and would evacuate anyone in Mud River, GCG more efficiently". The Regional Municipality of Manitou city council with vote on the proposal for the Minesing connection road at their regular meeting later this week.
