The blue and white paint had barely finished drying when a negligent motorist was caught breaking the new parking bylaw regarding wheelchair spaces. "I was just running into the bank for a minute I did not think it would be a problem" stated the 24 year old female identified only as Mary. Mary was fined curbside MC$200 for her ignorance of the new bylaw.
"Do not test us on this" said Sergeant Jonathon Steel of Manitou Department of Public Safety "we take the safety and services of our citizens seriously. If you park in the designated spaces without a valid tag you will be fined at the curb".
The Regional Municipality of Manitou passed a bylaw last week creating the new parking spaces and included a mandatory fine of MC$200 for any violators. "I take our bylaws regarding those with mobility challenges very seriously and it is just ignorance if you break the rules. When I park in a shopping mall parking lot (GCG or RL) I am the guy who parks way over from the door. As long as I am able to walk I will park way over, there are people who need the spaces closer because of a variety of challenges" said Winter Silversmith CAO Manitou Tourism. "I applaud council for passing the recent bylaw in our community and for the creation of a new parking lot in the North Promenade to increase accessibility to the medical clinic" he said.
