Manitou Police Services remain on the scene of Mountain Fuels Gas & Go on the Mud Flats Expressway in Mud River, Manitou, investigating the double shooting that occurred there yesterday around 7:30 pm. A call to 9-1-1 by a customer who walked into the scene after the shooting brought the full force of Manitou Police Services down on the city.
Maria Gonabegon, a popular reporter from KMTV-7 News was on the scene around 8:30 pm to report the information that had been made available at that time. The police had not yet released the names of the victims pending contact of their next of kin. Those names have now been released to the press, they are Cassidy Close age 20 and Martin Meek age 24 who were both shot and killed during what appears to be a robbery gone wrong. The cash register was emptied and several items including cigarettes were stolen by the two robbers. Both employees were recently hired by Mountain Fuels Inc. at the Mud River station and both are from nearby communities outside Manitou.
The area was immediately closed off including a six block radius around the Mud Flats Expressway in central north Manitou and a street by street search was conducted. Approximately ninety minutes after the incident two robbery suspects were arrested while trying to drive onto the GCG-1 Expressway near the Manitou Interchange. The suspects names have not been released pending further investigation into the crimes.
Manitou Tourism CAO Winter Silversmith has been on the scene since last night and stated that "it is a terrible loss for our community and my heart goes out to the families of the victims. While too late to help them I have spoken with police services and our council and there will be additional police support provided to our city with the construction of police stations in Mud River and Meaford this month".
A spokesperson for Mountain Fuels Incorporated stated that "this is certainly a tragedy and a great loss for the families of the victims, our Mountain Fuels family and the community. The location in Mud River will remain closed until further notice".
