This is a conversation going on somewhere in that "other grid" right now...
Avatar, umm we'll call him Bob, and Avatar, Bill, just met at a Sandbox somewhere in the, well, you know where...
Bob: So, did you make it?
Bill: Make it where?
Bob: Over to the Great Canadian Grid I told you about.
Bill: that OpenSim place?
Bill: Nah, it's OpenSim "nothing really exciting happens there".
Bob: Not so my friend, not so! You just missed the social event of 2015!
Bill: Sure, sure, what, everyone gathered around the campfire and sang songs?
Bob: Well, maybe :) but no, Great Canadian Grid just set some records this weekend.
Bill: Oh, how?
Bob: Their two day event, the GCG Christmas Spectacular 2015 had about two hundred avatars in attendance in just two days.
Bill: Well, that's not really that much is it?
Bob: Oh yeah, well they had one hundred and three online today. It's a new record for them, beating their old record by fifty percent.
Bill: Okay, that's cool.
Bob: Yeah, especially when they had forty-six avatars at the event at one time.
Bill: Forty-six, wow, I'm lucky if I bump into four, let alone six, people when I'm exploring here.
Bob: And, they had eighteen performers take the stage in two days, earning a total of over $75 Canadian for their participation, and, there was over MC$4,000 in prizes too for those who attended. Jen Smith (Dreamland Group) organized the event with help from her family and the GCG staff and they had two great sponsors, Roddie Macchi, the owner of the grid gave MC$10,000 ($51cdn) and Manitou Tourism gave MC$7,500 ($39cdn) to help pay the artists and prizes.
Bill: So wait, what you are telling me is that people actually earned money, but it's OpenSim!
Bob: Yup, they are on Podex over there, which means you can make real money for performing there, plus a lot of clubs are working on getting PayPal tip jars in place so artists can get paid even faster.
Bill: That's awesome. I thought the only way people could make money for performing was to do it in, well here.
Bob: There are a lot of great venues all over the Great Canadian Grid, and they have about three thousand members now so you've got a good chance of drawing a decent crowd.
Bill: Who do they talk to?
Bob: I think the best thing to do is send your friends over to their website, let me find it here, www.greatcanadiangrid.ca and get them signed up as members. You have to join and meet everyone, it really is the friendliest grid in the Metaverse!
Bob: Here, check it out Bill, I have pictures!
Special thanks to Jen Smith, Anna Wright, Nox Darkness, Bill Gentry, Sunbeam Magic
and others for these and more photos to come this week!
