The Regional Municipality of Manitou community council has voted to close down the Midland Residents Park Solarium effective this weekend. "We just don't find the park being used and the almost six hundred prims could be used for an expansion of the nearby harbour district" a spokesperson for council told the Corran Journal this afternoon.
"We will demolish the building on Friday evening and begin construction of the Harbour District expansion immediately" said Bill D'Rite Economic Development Manager for Manitou. The Solarium was constructed last fall to continue year round use of the residents-only park and includes a fire pit, grass year round, a sandy beach, stage and palm trees. The maintenance costs for the facility have increased steadily since the construction and recent issues with a shifting foundation, the result of heavy spring rains, have made the expenses too high to keep the building open.
The cost of the expansion to the Harbour District is estimated in the five hundred to one thousand prim range and will include offices and upgraded storage buildings.
